came across this on another blog while i was surfing. thought i'd post it here in case someone might find it interesting or useful, as a way of making a difference in the world, on a daily basis. :) i think it's a great idea.
the name of the site is
freerice. it offers multiple choice questions on a subject of your choice: vocabulary, math, art, chemistry, and more.
for every correct answer you get, the site's sponsors donate 20 grains of rice to the united nations world food program. true, 20 grains does not seem like much. but a lot of people playing can make a difference.
for example, on october 2, 2008, in that one day, 139,912,420 grains of rice were donated by the site's users.
to make it more concrete, here are some of the projects carried out where freerice was distributed (as per the freerice site):
* In Bangladesh, to feed 27,000 refugees from Myanmar for two weeks.
* In Cambodia, to provide take-home rations of four kilograms of rice for two months to 13,500 pregnant and nursing women.
* In Uganda, to feed 66,000 school children for a week.
* In Nepal, to feed over 108,000 Bhutanese refugees for three days.
* In Bhutan, to feed 41,000 children for 8 days.
* In Myanmar, to feed 750,000 cyclone affected people for 3 days.

my parents were able to donate 20,000 grains by playing. i used to be able to play more, but i still try to get in at least 1,000 grains a day, if not more.
it's estimated that about 20,000 grains are enough to feed one person 2 meals, good for one day.
thank you for viewing this thread. :)
