    PJ Master Landscape Plan

    Dear sir,

I  refer to the announcement in the Star's Saturday Metro of Sept 26 concerning your soliciting views on the Landscape Master Plan for PJ. Where can I get info on the details about the plan?

I had been a resident of PJ since 1990 and I have some general views on the existing state of landscape in the township

    1) I notice there is a general lack o professionalism in the planning, implementation and the management the landscaping in the township. Many projects were not properly planned and most of  them has unnecessary, and sometimes the wrong, structures being built. For example, the laying out of paved walkways without the prior installation of a proper subterranean drainage system in community parks often lead to impeded drainage flow and resulted in soggy and waterlogged fields and the death of trees.

2 There is a total lack of knowledge for tree and plant maintenance Most of  the time, the plants were planted wth much fanfare and were then left to their own device to survive. The so called mainktenance by contractors is a joke becasue most.if not all,has no training in plant maintenence at all.Take the instance of the periodic 'tree prunnig' exercise (I called it the tree maiming exercise)-the trees were simply delimbed and maimed, not selectively prunned.I    cannot fault the contractors really because I presume the only instruction they get from the MBPJ is just :"Apa yang rendah dari 12 kaki, potong!".Tree prunning is a skill that requires thorough knowledge of the branching habit of the plant and not simply the lopping off the branches of the tree.

3 With the rapid loss of green and open space in the township,it is imperative that the exsiting green spaces be retained and improved  upon.Community parks play an impotant role in a community. It is where residents meet, play, interact and relax. Its facilities must be well upkept, the plants well maintained the place e made safe for all.Proper landscaping with the right plants will go a long way to make it a pleasant and welcomed place to visit.

4 There is still a lot of scope and space to increase the number of trees in the township to make it a more pleasant place to live and work. The opportunity to plant the correct tree species and to correct past mistakes is very great with if there is comittment and with proper advise and guidance. It is better to get it right the first time as far as the choice of tree is concerned because it takes time to see the result.PJ on the whole has a very limited range of  trees in its open spaces -there is a distinct lack of colours and there is inadequate shade in many places because of the wrong choice  of  trees.
